A Young Couple Evaluates Their Irresponsible And Heavy Drinking And Their Short And Long-Term Plans, Dreams, And Hopes
Linda and Frank have been dating for four-and-a-half years. They met while taking the same Russian history class at a relatively small, rural, Church affiliated liberal arts college located in the Western part of the United States. While they were basically good friends at first, they eventually started to date when they were in their first year of college.
Given the fact that both of them came from very strict backgrounds, neither one of them drank very much social drinking stage when they first began dating. As the time progressed, however, they began to go to more happy hours, sorority and fraternity parties, keg parties, and football bashes. As a result, they little by little began to drink more the longer they interacted with one another.
After they graduated from college, they both found jobs in a large city located around fifty miles from their undergraduate college. Then they finally determined that they would move into the same apartment with one another.
With any significant adjustment in an individual's life there is normally something that triggers the particular change in question. For Linda and Frank the thought of buying a new house and having children was this "trigger." Simply put, for the first time in their lives, Frank and Linda began to critically assess their drinking behavior and the alcohol long term effects on their health. As an example, they began to wonder if they would ever experience an alcohol overdose due to their irresponsible drinking.
Would their heavy and irresponsible drinking negatively affect their ability to have children? How would they be able to continue spending nearly all of their money on drinking if they were to begin saving for a new house?
From a different slant on things, although neither one of them ever suffered from alcohol poisoning, received a DUI, or experienced alcohol poisoning symptoms, they realized that their heavy drinking was becoming a problem that they could not "sweep under the carpet" anymore. All of these uncertainties undeniably resulted in the same conclusion, namely that Linda and Frank needed to realize that they couldn't continue their heavy drinking if their dreams, goals, and aspirations were to be attained.
Once they came to this conclusion, they alerted their drinking buddies about their their goal of buying or building a new house, about their marital plans, and about their plans to start a family. They also told their drinking friends that they still wanted to associate with them but that they would be drinking in strict moderation from this point forward so that they could start realizing their future plans, dreams, and hopes.
Surprisingly, all of their buddies expressed relief because they too had been pondering the direction of their lives and concluded that their life-styles were much too frequently centered around drinking. They also felt that they would have to change significantly if they were to become more responsible and show more forethought for their health, their careers, and for their goals in the next twenty or twenty-five years.
After their candid chat with their buddies about their goals, aspirations, and dreams, Linda and Frank actually started to have more meaningful relationships with all of their friends. The primary reason for this was the fact that all of them were on the same wave-length regarding their excessive and heavy drinking and their relatively short and long-term plans, goals, and aspirations.
